A number merge puzzle with no timer
Divine Merge is a free number merge game for your browser, in the family of 2048-style puzzles. A four by four board, numbers that are powers of two, and one rule: slide everything in a direction, and equal numbers that touch combine into their double.
There is no timer and no pressure. The game waits for you and ends only when the board is full and nothing can merge. Reaching 2048 opens the gate, but the game does not stop there.
How to play Divine Merge
- The board starts with two 2s on it.
- Slide the whole board with the arrow keys, WASD or a swipe. Every tile moves as far as it can in that direction.
- When two equal numbers collide they merge into one tile of double the value. 2 and 2 make 4, 4 and 4 make 8.
- After every move that changes the board, a new 2 appears on an empty square.
- Build a 2048 tile. THE GATE OPENS appears once, and you can keep playing.
- The game ends when the board is full and no two neighbouring numbers match. NO MOVES appears with your score.
Controls
- Keyboard: ← ↑ ↓ → or W A S D. One press is one slide.
- Touch: swipe across the board. A swipe shorter than about 26 pixels counts as a tap and is ignored, so swipe clearly. On phones an arrow pad also appears under the board.
- The New game button restarts at any time. After NO MOVES press Enter or Space, or tap. Esc goes back to the game list.
Scoring and rules
Plain slides score nothing. Every merge adds the value of the new tile to your score, so 2 and 2 give 4 points and 512 and 512 give 1,024. Merging big tiles matters far more than making many small merges. There is no combo and no penalty.
Every new tile is a 2, never a 4. A move that cannot change the board is ignored: no new tile appears and your move counter does not go up. Each tile merges only once per move, so a row of 2 2 2 2 slid left becomes 4 4, not 8. Because new tiles are always 2s, the numbers on the board always add up to 4 plus twice your moves, so the first 2048 tile takes at least 1,022 moves.
Tips to score higher
- Keep your small tiles together. New tiles are always 2s, so they need neighbours to merge with.
- Test a direction for free. A slide that changes nothing is ignored, with no new tile and no move counted.
- Look for pairs before you give up. A full board is not lost while two equal numbers touch.
- With three equal tiles in a row, the direction you slide decides where the leftover one ends up. The pair nearest the wall merges first.
- On touch, swipe in one clear stroke across the board, or use the arrow pad.
Questions
- Is Divine Merge the same as 2048?
- It follows the same idea, sliding and merging numbers on a four by four board toward 2048, but it is our own game with its own look, sound and rules. For example, every new tile here is a 2.
- Does the game end at 2048?
- No. THE GATE OPENS appears once and play continues, with the score still climbing.
- Is my game saved if I close the tab?
- Only your best score is saved, in your browser. The board itself is not, so reloading starts a new game.
