A maze game where the hunters can be hunted
Soul Chase is a free maze game for your browser. You are an angel in a demon-haunted maze, and your job is to gather every lost soul in it while three demons hunt you. Two large halos turn the tables: eat one and, for a few seconds, the demons run from you.
The angel moves by itself and keeps going until it hits a wall, so the game is all about choosing your turns. Clear the maze and the next round starts with faster demons and a shorter halo effect. You have three lives and there is no timer.
How to play Soul Chase
- The angel starts at the bottom and runs on its own. You steer by choosing a direction, and it turns at the next opening.
- Eat the small souls: 194 of them, plus two large halos in the top corners.
- Avoid the demons. Touching one costs a life and puts everyone back at the start. The souls you have eaten stay eaten.
- Eat a halo and the demons turn blue and frightened. Touch them while they are blue to banish them for points. They go back to their starting tile and stay frightened until the effect runs out.
- Eat everything to clear the maze. After 1.6 seconds the next round starts, with your lives and score kept.
Controls
- Keyboard: ← ↑ ↓ → or W A S D. A direction you press early is remembered and taken at the next opening. Pressing the opposite direction reverses at once.
- Touch: swipe on the maze (about 20 pixels of finger travel is enough), or use the arrow pad on phones.
- P pauses, Enter or Space (or a tap) restarts after GAME OVER, Esc goes back to the game list.
Scoring and rules
A small soul is worth 10 points and a halo is worth 50. Banishing a frightened demon scores 200 times the number you have caught during that halo effect: 200 for the first, 400 for the second, 600 for the third. Eating another halo starts that count again.
Each round the demons get faster, from 4.35 tiles per second in round one to a top of 6.0 from round seven, while the angel stays at 6.4. The halo effect shrinks too, from about 7 seconds in round one to 3.2 seconds from round 13. The maze, the number of demons and the number of souls never change. The hunter heads straight for you, the other two chase more cleverly, and one of them drifts off to the bottom corner from time to time.
Tips to score higher
- Use the U-turn. Demons cannot turn around except in dead ends, while you can reverse instantly.
- Save the halos for when two or three demons are close. The chain pays 200, 400 and 600, and eating the second halo early wastes it.
- Head straight for the demons after a halo. They run at about half your speed while frightened, and they blink white when less than two seconds are left.
- Press your turn early. A direction pressed before a junction is taken at the next one, so you do not need perfect timing.
- Use the READY pause. You get 1.1 seconds at the start of every round and after every death to press your first direction.
Questions
- Does the maze have tunnels?
- No. The outer edge is solid wall and nothing wraps around.
- Is there a time limit in Soul Chase?
- No timer. The only thing that ends the game is losing all three lives.
- Is my best score saved?
- Yes, in your browser, when you clear a maze, when the game ends and when you leave the game.
