A lane-hopping road crossing game
Pilgrim's Crossing is a free cross the road game for your browser. Hop from the bottom of the board to the gate at the top, past four lanes of beasts and two rivers of fire that you can only cross on rafts.
There is no clock. The pressure comes from the traffic and from the rafts, which carry you toward the edge of the screen whether you like it or not. You have three lives, and every gate you reach sends you back to the start of a new, faster board.
How to play Pilgrim's Crossing
- You start on the bottom row. Hop one tile at a time with the arrow keys, WASD, a swipe or the on-screen arrows.
- Cross the four beast lanes. Touching a beast kills you.
- Rest on the safe strip in the middle, then jump onto the rafts in the two rivers of fire. Landing in the fire, or being carried off the edge on a raft, costs a life.
- Reach the top row, the gate. GATE OPEN appears and a new, faster board begins.
- You have three lives. When the third goes, THE ROAD ENDS shows your score and the gates you crossed.
Controls
- Keyboard: ← ↑ ↓ → or W A S D. One press is one hop, and one extra press is remembered while you are mid-hop.
- Touch: swipe on the board. A short drag is enough, and a long drag chains several hops. An arrow pad also appears on phones.
- P pauses, Enter or Space (or a tap) restarts after THE ROAD ENDS, Esc goes back to the game list.
Scoring and rules
You earn 10 points for each row that is further forward than any row you have reached on that attempt, up to 70 on one crossing. Reaching the gate pays 200 plus 40 for each level: 280 for the first gate, 320 for the second, 360 for the third and so on. A perfect first crossing is worth 350 points. Moving backwards is free.
Every gate makes all the beast lanes and all the rafts 12 percent faster than the board before, up to 1.9 times the starting speed from the ninth board on. Dying resets your position and the row bonuses, but not the lane speeds and not your score. The lanes freeze during the one second pause after a death.
Tips to score higher
- Wait for a gap. There is no clock, so stop on the safe strip or the start row until the traffic opens up. Only on a raft is time against you.
- Aim for the middle of a raft. The landing zone is a little shorter than the raft, and a sideways hop moves a full tile. The river nearest the gate has fewer and narrower rafts.
- Do not ride a raft to the edge. You die once you are carried off the side, so step off in time.
- Hops are not checked while you are in the air, so you can leave a tile at the last moment, and you can queue the next hop before you land.
- The lane just below the middle strip is the fastest and the first to become hard to read as the boards speed up.
- Retreating costs nothing. Row bonuses are paid only for new ground, so going back a row does not lose points.
Questions
- Is there a time limit in Pilgrim's Crossing?
- No. The game is not timed. Only the rafts put you on a clock, because they carry you toward the edge of the board.
- What are the gates?
- The gate is the top row, your goal. Each time you reach it a new board starts with faster traffic, and the Gate counter goes up.
- Can I play on a phone?
- Yes. Swipe on the board or use the arrow pad under it.
